The modern girls room should embody the virtues of today’s girl: tech savvy, smart, playful and a little boy crazy. If all of that can’t be fit into one room, it’s okay to focus on just a few of the virtues. Here are some things that no modern girls room should be without.

Tech Space

Don’t leave out room for gadgets, including laptops, video games, mp3 players or digital cameras. In an age when every moment is documented, the modern room cannot exist without at least a few items that pay tribute to the technological age.

Smart Space

The girls of today grow into the businesswomen of tomorrow. At least a portion of the modern girls room should reflect this ambition. A nice desk with all the bookish accompaniments should do the trick.

Boy Space

If she’s old enough, the modern girl needs at least one section of her room devoted to acknowledging that the opposite sex exists. Even if it’s a picture of Einstein above her desk, it’s wise for a girl to pay homage to the other side. If she’s boy crazy, Justin Bieber posters can cling to every section of the wall.

Colors and décor vary for every modern girl. Pictures of sunsets will be nice for one girl, while the next girl might prefer pictures of robots. A third kind of girl might prefer pictures of the Twitter bird.

It’s a time period for customization, so there might not be any rhyme or reason to your girl’s decoration of her space. But in the end, when she stands back and looks at her room, she’ll know to herself that it’s entirely her. That’s why it is, and should be, confusing to everyone else. Decorating can always be negotiated with parents during the decorating process so that in the end, everyone loves the room as much as the modern girl loves it.
